COVID-19 vs Market Access: How Do Payers Continue to Balance Competing Priorities?
I’m Charline Shan, Vice President, Director – Access Experience Team (AET), editor of All Access. Every other month we deliver noteworthy and groundbreaking news, sharing the latest payer insights brought to you by our team of former access decision makers.
A lot has changed since our last newsletter. In the last issue, we focused on the uncertainties of 2020 but did not predict the upheaval of the healthcare system due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Faced with unchartered territories, payers are adapting to and addressing the demands driven by the pandemic; when the curve flattens, payers will be potentially exposed to unaccounted costs and losses.
In this edition, we review the impact of COVID-19 to access decision makers at various types of payers and the necessary next steps for market access stakeholders. Jeremy Schafer shares the results of market research conducted with different types of payers; Andy Cournoyer discusses the findings of an AET survey on virtual engagement; Reta Mourad, a recent addition to AET, reviews the Magellan trend report and encourages continued engagements; and Avi Mamdi, another new member of AET, examines the opportunities within health systems and IDNs.
You’ll find the insights in All Access to be thought provoking and helpful in navigating the payer landscape. As always, please feel free to drop me a note and let me know if you have a topic suggestion for the payer team to address, and we’ll do our best to cover it in a future edition.
By the way, as an additional resource to share, Precision recently compiled a password-free microsite for its employees and clients to access a family-friendly gallery of topics, in support of the many now working from home. There are a number of great suggestions and resources included there, please do check out the site.
Stay safe and well,

Virtual Engagement: The Next Trend for Payers and Market Access
From quarantine and stay-at-home orders to businesses being closed, daily life has pivoted considerably to being digital in nature. Precision’s Andy Cournoyer discusses the findings of a new AET survey on virtual engagement and understanding payer preferences for obtaining information and interacting with drug manufacturers in the current environment.
An Industry Trend Report Offers an Opportunity to Stay Connected With Payers
Precision’s Reta Mourad reviews this year’s Magellan trend report and sheds light on just how much has changed in the medical benefit over the last ten years. What can we expect as payers continue to search for new and innovative strategies to manage the significant growth in drug approvals, utilization, and spend?
COVID-19: How Are Health Systems and Integrated Delivery Systems Responding, and How Can Manufacturers Help?
With health systems and large integrated delivery networks shouldering the lion’s share of caring for the most critically ill patients in our healthcare system, it’s important to keep an eye on how they are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Precision’s Avi Mamidi discusses the opportunity for manufacturers to work with IDNs ad health systems to bridge the coverage gaps.
