2022 Trends, Entrants, and Developments (TEDs) Disrupting the Healthcare Landscape
Good day to you! I am Elizabeth Oyekan, PharmD, FCSHP, CPHQ, Vice President – Access Experience Team, editor of All Access Newsletter. As we rapidly progress into 2022 (we are already in the third month), we are seeing an increasing number of TEDs looking to disrupt the healthcare landscape to achieve better care and equity, better access, and better costs of care in the quest for a more effective healthcare ecosystem.
To this end, we have asked our key expert ex-payers to provide insights into the trends, new entrants, and developments they see disrupting healthcare—from emerging roles, new partnerships, and collaborations—to new models of care and policies and the potential impact these will have on payers, patients, and/or pharma.
Over the last year, the United States has seen a decline in telehealth in care delivery after its rapid growth in 2020. At the same time, virtual-first health plans are on the rise as a mode of increasing patient access and care delivery. Jennifer Williams, PharmD, BCOP, provides an overview of these entrants as they seek to leverage the virtual space to improve patient outcomes and enhance the patient experience while simultaneously lowering the cost of care.
Erin Lopata, PharmD, MPH, discusses the emerging role of community pharmacists along the drug use continuum in oncology from clinical trials to screenings, addressing social determinants of health issues, and supporting patients with adverse events.
Dominic Galante, MD, then takes us into the evolving world of “payviders”, including the evolution of the convergence of payers and providers in the future of health care.
Barbara Henry, RPh, addresses the developing roles of alternative drug makers—will they be able to disrupt the drug pricing landscape and impact drug costs?
Finally, Reta Mourad, PharmD, highlights current and upcoming disruptive policies that may impact healthcare stakeholders—keeping us all on our toes!
We believe that you will find these TEDs and their impact on access insightful as you navigate the healthcare and payer landscape. As always, please feel free to drop me a note and let me know if you have a topic suggestion for the payer team to address, and we will do our best to cover it in a future edition.
Best regards,
